Improve the usability of the Replaces entry field #1375
Comments
@rjsparks@nostrum.com commented Sandy Murphy ran into this around IETF 92. She suggests that the control needs to deal better names that are cut-paste from other places. A hint about the syntax the form is looking for would go a long way. |

@rjsparks@nostrum.com commented While the documentation goes a long way, the full fix to this will involve better cleaning of the form, or possibly improving the document search control. If the control has something in it, but hasn't matched a document, we don't want to leave the user thinking it's ok. |

@peter@akayla.com commented I attempted to reproduce the problem, by entering a bogus draft name as a replacement draft. There is text below the auto-complete text box that indicates no match was found. There might be some minor confusion caused when the text box clears when the user clicks anywhere else after a bogus entry, but I would think the fact that there's yellow text below the bogus entry prior to clicking away should be hint enough that the entry was not okay. The user cannot even hit the Enter key to have the bogus entry accepted. While it might be friendlier to have the auto-complete strip out versions and .txt suffixes, that would entail digging into the 3rd-party auto-completion tool. |

| by pkyzivat@alum.mit.eduThe auto-completing entry field for selecting drafts that this draft replaces at /doc/draft-whatever/edit/replaces/ does not recognize names that include versions or a .txt extension. It would be nicer if it recognized what the user meant when providing that information, especially when providing it by pasting.
It would also be useful to provide some help-text letting folks know what's expected in the field.
